Student Spotlight – Matthew Turnock

02 June 2026

This year, GACO introduced its student membership initiative, designed to encourage local students to broaden their knowledge, strengthen professional expertise, and support ongoing personal and career development within Gibraltar’s compliance and governance community.

A strong example of the value of this initiative is Matthew Turnock, MA in Leadership & Management student at the University of Gibraltar.

Alongside his part-time studies, Matthew holds several significant professional and civic roles. He has served as Director and Trustee of St John since 2015, has acted as their Data Protection Officer since 2021, and, since 2025, has been appointed as an Independent Commissioner for Oaths.

Matthew’s journey reflects both resilience and commitment to public service. When asked what brought him to higher education, he shared: “The local bus and a lifetime of Gibraltar experience as a wheelchair user.” He added a powerful reflection on inclusion and determination: “If I can do this as a disabled student and you want a full life then you have no excuse.”

In describing his professional services, Matthew notes: “My name is Matthew J Turnock and I am an independent Commissioner for Oaths in Gibraltar. I provide fast and accurate support for affidavits, statutory declarations, certified copies and document signing whenever required.” He can be contacted directly at +350 5401 5499.

GACO is pleased to spotlight students like Matthew, whose work and example embody the purpose of its student membership programme: enabling local talent to develop, contribute, and lead within Gibraltar’s professional community.
